What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based education program developed to improve mental health literacy and give people practical skills for supporting someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.
Much like physical first aid, the aim isn’t to diagnose or treat the person.
Instead, you learn how to recognise that something may be wrong, approach the person, listen and respond appropriately, and encourage professional or other suitable support when needed.
The Standard Mental Health First Aid course focuses on adults supporting other adults — including friends, family members, colleagues and people within the wider community.
Know what to do when someone is struggling
It can be difficult to know how to respond when someone around you begins behaving differently or tells you that they’re struggling.
You might notice changes in their mood or behaviour. Someone might disclose that they’re experiencing a mental health problem. Or you may find yourself facing a situation in which you’re concerned about someone’s immediate safety.
Mental Health First Aid training is designed to reduce some of that uncertainty.
Through the training, participants develop practical skills to recognise warning signs, begin supportive conversations and respond to a range of mental health problems and crisis situations.
The purpose isn’t to turn you into a therapist.
It’s to help you become more confident about recognising when support may be needed and knowing how to respond.
What will you learn?
The Standard Mental Health First Aid course develops knowledge and practical skills across three important areas:
Recognising
Develop greater awareness of signs that another adult may be experiencing a mental health problem.
Responding
Learn how to approach someone, begin a supportive conversation and provide appropriate initial support.
Connecting
Develop greater confidence in encouraging appropriate professional and other supports when needed.
The training also considers how to respond when someone may be experiencing a mental health crisis or be at risk of harm.

✧ Start a supportive conversation using an evidence-based approach

✧ Respond a when someone may be experiencing a mental health crisis
